History of the library

Till 1969 it functioned such a library that supplied the vicinal crofts. It was run by the MEDOSZ Móricz Zsigmond Sports and Cultural-home.

In 1970 the maintainer split the collection including a few thousands of books into two. One part remained in maintenance of the MEDOSZ , the other part was moved to one of the rooms upstairs in the building of the Centrál. It was run by the Parish Council.

In 1974 the library was given the name of „Petőfi Memorial Library” and moved to a detached building at 3 Petőfi sétány. The books for both adults and children were available in the same room in 240 square metres in such a place that went for modern, bright and large at that time. The service was amplified with a so called fonotéka section, which provided an opportunity for the readers to listen to music on the spot and a magazine section, which was also available in the reading-room. At that time we could afford to enlarge and modernize the holdings so the numbers of both the documents that could be used on the spot and the borrowable ones increased significantly during a few years. At this time four deposit libraries worked. Three of them met a claim of the people living in the crofts, in the fourth library those ones sought relaxation who lived in the old people’s day-time home. However, some years later these deposit libraries closed down on one hand for money troubles on the other hand for decrease of the inhabitants of the crofts.

In 1983 the József Attila Cultural Centre was formally opened and then the children, youth and educational literature was moved to one of its premises, which was suitable in both function and size. The adult books remained in their original place but in September 2007 for economic reasons they were also transferred to the clubroom of the Cultural Centre.
